Calne

My town is a charming town,
much to see and walk around.
From Saxon times to urban sprawl
Calne has seen, been and done it all.

But now the shops are folding,
the shops are closing down
Folk will start to leave here,
go to better climes.
But this is just a chapter,
an episode in time.

Calne astride the River Marden,
famed for Dunstan, wool, pigs and things.
What goes around comes around,
we know of economic stings.

Again the Parish Church
will ring in the changes.
Healthier times will come again,
with subtle rearranging…
Yet some of the nicer things
hopefully,
will never need to change.

WE LOVE CALNE

We started a campaign in that ‘we love Calne’ by issuing business cards with a Wiltshire dialect quiz, answers only available on our web. Because of  negative views of our town we were hacked off by the attitude, which we will not share nor accommodate.

The cards encourage people to investigate our interest in Calne. We had a phenomenal amount of ‘hits’, from this approach.
It further developed when we decided to take the concept, and designed our own badge which has been received favorably far and wide.
We first distributed our badges at the marvelous motor bike meet, held on The Strand and through out the rest of Calne. This was the second largest motorcycle gathering in southern England, held on an annual basis.

Since the visit of HM The Queen in 2001 we have seen various developments, these being the the Lottery Winning of £68.000 to enhance Castlefields, Running of the Sports Centre, which was due to closure by NWDC.
We welcome back the Town Carnival, and fun was had by all.
Last years Lantern Parade in November was a wonderful nocturnal event. We look forward and anticipate the event at the end of this month.

There are many good things to be said of Calne, particularly the young people.
They are the future of Calne, their dream is tomorrows reality.
Calne has continued to develop in accordance with a thirty year projection.

written by Simon Bewley/BFCHThe devastating effect of losing a small community’s main employer

Combined with ineffectual town planning has an all too familiar ring today.

The town we live in, Calne, is no exception. Once a t=hriving typical country

Town – and now the arsehole of Wiltshire through which everything passes!

Been livin’ in SN11 for many a year,

There’s been a lotta’ changes and a lotta different faces around here,

Forgotten little town that’s had it’s heart ripped out, rubbish on the streets,

Nobody about, I’ve been livin in SN 11 for manys a year.

I still recall the day when they closed the old factory down,

Well she once brought a little bit of life into this dirty old town,

But now the young ones only dream, it’s life on the dole and a kid by 18,
I still remember when they closed the old factory down.

When we were young we used to say how we’d quit this town some day,

Ten years on wer’e still hanging around, the dreams we had were never

found, in SN11, our home town.

Been drinkin’ in SN11 for manys a year.

Wastin’ all my money down town drinkin’ whiskey and beer,

Workin’ all week just for Friday night, then out with the boys to put

The world to right, drinkin’ in SN11 for manys a year,

Lookin’ back on summers gone, those hazy days just seemed so long.

Before you know your youth has flown, in a small town we’ve all outgrown,

in SN11, our home town.

When we were young we used to say how we’d quit this town some day,

Ten years on wer’e still hanging around, the dreams we had were never

found,

Lookin’ back on summers gone, those hazy days just seemed so long.

Before you know your youth has flown, in a small town we’ve all outgrown,

Friends have come and friends have gone they all played a part in this small
town song,

The days I laughed, the nights I cried, thinkin’ of those
who lived and died,in SN11,

our home town
